In the spring of 2008, my basement was in the process of being renovated. The room had been gutted to the drywall and concrete floors.  I set up a few guitars and a drum kit and started playing again. The songs arrived quickly.  My last two records had always been described as what a Sunday afternoon on the back porch would sound like.  I wanted to shake that label. The live-off-the-floor sound that the basement provided birthed a new sound, a new record.

After a busy summer and fall, I re-opened those sessions in January of 2009 and gathered up any loose demos I had written over the past two years. Shortly after Christmas I recorded the song, “Danger” and not long after that momentum brought six new songs. The end was in sight.

The new sound showcased the do-it-yourself production styles that my previous efforts tried to hide. The sounds of real life were left in the mix. Tuning guitars, first takes, a crying cat and the sound of the kitchen upstairs all were left in the mix. The large basement taught me that sometimes the best sounds come naturally when you simply set up a mic and play.  I wanted the microphones to be the listeners’ ears in the studio and to record the performance in the same way you would hear it if you were right there.

The album is called, “Ghost Party” and I think it’s the best I've ever done.  I took my time with the lyrics and I forced myself to make every line count.  The album title comes from the idea that each of song represents a different part of life, the good parts and the not so good parts. Each song is a ghost.

If you’ve been listening to my music for a few years, then I hope you see signs of musical and lyrical growth.  If you are new to my music, then I'm pleased we’ve met and you’ve given me a chance. And to both groups, I will tell you that everything i do in music is just an honest attempt to do for others what a good song does for me.
